Thank you for your willingness to consider becoming a Volunteer Trail Guide at Audubon. Every year we see over 5,000 children at the Center. Most of them come between mid-April and mid-June with their classes from school. With only 1 part-time and 3 full-time teacher/naturalists, we simply cannot take care of that many students, especially since we prefer small groups.

That’s why we need your help.

Requirements for Becoming a Trail Guide

  • Comfort in and some knowledge of the natural worldSarah leads a group through Bob's Garden - a.k.a. the Herb and Butterfly Garden. It is important to have a love of the outdoors that can be shared with children.  Knowing the difference between a tree, flower, bird, and bug is important.  Knowing the name of every tree, flower, bird, and bug is not.
  • Experience with Children: While not absolutely necessary, it does help if you have worked with young children before in some capacity – your own children, a scout troop, Sunday School… At the very least, you should like children and enjoy sharing nature with them.
  • Availability: Almost all of our walks happen during school hours – that is between 9:30 and 2:00 Monday through Friday. While we schedule some walks in the fall and summer, and a few in winter our heaviest schedule is mid-April through mid-June.  Some Cub Scout and Girl Scout groups ask for Discovery Walks on weekends, but not many.  Some of our Trail Guides are available 2 or 3 times a week.  Others can only lead a walk every other week.  We are happy for any time you can share with us!
  • Background Check: We may ask you for personal information that will allow us to run a State background check.
